10 Practical Tips to Grow Your Business from Fellow Entrepreneurs

Do you have your own business that you are looking to take to the next level?

We asked lots of our stallholders taking part in our Handmade Village at The Christmas Ideal Home Show on their advice for anyone looking for small business growth and success!

1. Embrace Continuous Learning

Hare and Moon Jewellery owner Sam emphasises the importance of lifelong learning. She says, “As a nurse, I am committed to lifelong learning and I apply this to my jewellery as well.” Sam attends workshops to learn new techniques and has even completed a silver metal clay diploma to enhance her skills.

2. Take action

Adelaide who runs Sincerely Lumiere says to just start it! You never know what it can become. Don’t be a slave to knowledge but rather put all that you have learned (about your area of business) into action.

3. Set Clear Goals and Reflect

Bella at Making Waves Collective also recommends using a goal-setting journal. She uses the “power of 3” journal by Yop and Tom, which helps her not only set goals but also reflect on her progress.

Journaling can be a fantastic tool for entrepreneurs, offering a structured way to prioritise tasks, celebrate small victories, and stay motivated.

4. Think about your ‘Why’

Alero founder Jessica recommends to ensure that you’ve done all your research, think about what your brand ethos is, and why you’re starting the brand. People resonate with passionate brands who are purposeful so and remember to identify what makes you different to all the other brands selling similar products.

5. Prioritise Self-Care

Ria, owner of Millie Moo Designs, shares a great tip for managing stress: “Write a list and tick things off, and gym and spa!” Remember, taking care of yourself is important for your own health, not just for your business’s success.

By carving out time for self-care activities—whether it’s hitting the gym, enjoying a spa day, or just reading a book—you recharge your mind and body, allowing you to approach your business with renewed energy and focus.

6. Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People

Ria from Millie Moo Designs also advises, “Surround yourself with like-minded people, meet other small business owners to share tips and listen to motivational podcasts” to stay motivated during tough times. You could join an online business network or attend networking events to find your like-minded community.

7. Be selective in listening to feedback

Hannah who owns Hannah Jean Studio shares that a lot of people are going to poop on your ideas, and that can be for a lot of reasons. Maybe they’re right, maybe they tried something similar and failed, maybe they’re worried for you (parents) or maybe they’re jealous you dare to do something they’re too afraid to. If she listened to every doubter, she wouldn’t be standing here today with a viable small business, self-employed and enjoying her life. Hannah’s advice is to listen, but be very selective about whose advice you take.

8. Manage Your Time Effectively

All Shades owner, Amanda, shares her struggle with time management, reminding us that it’s a common challenge. She says, “Staying organised is a challenge for me and I would describe myself as a work in progress!”

Time management is crucial for entrepreneurs juggling multiple responsibilities. If you also struggle, try breaking down larger projects into smaller, manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Incorporating tools like digital calendars or project management apps can streamline your workflow and keep you organised. It can also help you more easily adjust when priorities shift and become impossible to ignore, such as when curating last mile delivery for an essential logistical network.

9. Get Feedback In Person

Nicky from Willow Gifts and Jewellery shaed that it really helped when she bit the bullet and started selling in person at markets. Seeing people’s reactions and getting feedback in person has been invaluable for her business.

10. Take Action Every Day

Mihaela at Cherry River also advises new business owners, “Just do it! Don’t overthink every detail. Things will definitely change once you get out there and start seeing what does/doesn’t actually work. The most important thing is to take ACTION every day and keep moving forward.”

Remember, growing a business takes time, patience, and perseverance. As Mihaela wisely states, “Be patient as nothing happens overnight!” Keep these tips in mind as you work towards your business goals.
